Accra:
We are just having some trouble getting our momentum going toward the end of the week here. We have decided to hit the pavement hard on Monday morning for 6 days straight and then we will take a trip to the Cape Coast and Elmina Castle the following week as a break. We have a month left here and I have really mixed feelings. Tim and I keep talking about and asking about what it might take to live here. The people are really lovely, so much so it makes you think....... But we are looking forward to central air, a soft bed, fluffy pillows, a car, and Tim misses his desk and his office. I believe he is ready to write his thesis! I am also ready to come home and write this thing so that we can move on to the next phase of our lives.
Today we stopped by the W.E.B. Dubois cultural center which is located kitty corner from the US Embassy. It is really quite a large compound that addresses the entire African Diaspora. Dr. Dubois and his wife Shirley are interred there. There is a restaurant in the compound called Roots that serves American and Ghanaian food as well. In the same neighborhood is a restaurant called Captain Hooks. It was like Red Lobster on steroids with respect to the fine dining experience. Linens, multiple sets of silverware, more than one waiter, chef made recommendations, etc.... Tim had the grouper fillet with lobster sauce on a bed of sauteed spinach with a side of roasted potatoes. I had the avocado and shrimp salad. We finished with a shared apple strudel with vanilla ice cream. It was lovely, but so pricey! I have decided to try and stick to local fare served in more humble establishments going forward. Thing is, the zoning here is sort of wonky. You have a slum next to the embassy and a four star restaurant. It is different.

We got bread with butter and everything! Definitely very Western. |

Ranch, Thousand Island, and nuclear hot salsa. |

Tim eating my avocado and shrimp salad! |

Very good quality, but oddly, only three tables occupied in the whole restaurant on a Saturday nite! |
