Day 28: Giving Thanks

Accra:

Today we laid low due to the items that needed to be taken care of here at the Baptist Guest House.  We had a massive leak in the ladies bathroom that needed to be repaired by the plumber.  Tim had to make a "minerals" (soda) and water run, and then the house computer stopped working.

I need to start the blog today with praise for the Guest House cook, Adeline.  A Ghanaian woman from the Volta region, she is charged with serving American food to the guests at the house.  This is no easy task as she has to travel to several different markets and supermarkets each week to get the proper ingredients.  It is enormously comforting to the guests here when they are first arriving and for reentry into the United States to have access to familiar foods to eat.  Some of the dinner menu items include fried rice and egg rolls, fried chicken, and lasagna.  For breakfast we have french toast, muffins, oatmeal, and omelettes.  Each and every meal is accompanied by fresh Ghanaian pineapple and each dinner has a dessert.  It's like being on a cruise ship as I have had to fight to maintain my current weight.

Tonight we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Osteria Michelangelo in the Airport Residential Area.  Funny.... even though it was an Italian restaurant, we felt like we were making a brief visit home.  There was airconditioning, rustic tile floors, wood beams, traditional furniture, and iron light fixtures. We began with a large, cold bottle of San Pellegrino.  Tim had their famous lasagna, and I had the mushroom risotto.  The olive oil and bread were amazing.  We finished with chocolate gelato and flourless chocolate torte that we shared.  It was over too soon.  We found a cab back to the Guest House.
